Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at our school are inspiring. They may have disabilities including autism, cerebral palsy or emotional disorders but their motivation and love of learning would challenge any student, with or without a disability.

The students have disabilities that prevent them from attending a general education school, but they do not lack the desire to learn.

Their disabilities include autism, cerebral palsy and other disorders that affect their motor skills, speech and development. The teachers at our school hold our students to high standards because we know they are capable of many great things regardless of their disabilities.

My Project

Every student in our school has been working on a unit on Mexico through their cluster teachers. In music and gym, our students have been listening to and learning Mexican music and dance steps. A wonderful way to culminate this unit is to surprise the kids with a mariachi concert where they can hear the music they learned live, and practice the dance steps they've worked so hard on! Mariachi Flor de Toloache is New York City's only all female mariachi band and has agreed to give our students a 1 hour concert that the students will surely love! Dressed in their mariachi costumes, these amazing performers will sing and play their instruments to the delight of our students, who I know will be moving to the music for the entire concert. Because our school is located in East Harlem, a very high need area, our students don't get many chances to see live music or go on field trips. I think this concert would be the highlight of their school year!

Donations to this project would mean so much to our students who don't get to experience a lot of what other students do.

We are a special needs school in a low income part of New York City and our students are often deprived of the amazing culture and diversity in our great city. Please donate so we can afford to put on a fun mariachi concert for our students who have worked so hard and deserve it! Thank you.
