My Students

My school is in downtown Brooklyn. Though the area is beautiful many of my students travel over two hours to get here. This past year we unveiled the Michael A. Johnson Research and Media Center. We were fortunate enough to receive donations from the city but our job is not done yet!

"Education is for improving the lives of other's and for leaving your community and world better than you found it" Marian Wright Edelman.

We would like to continue to build up our library! Our library has become a hub where students are borrowing books, attending programs and enjoying our space.

My Project

In March, we celebrate Women's History Month, and what better way to celebrate than to have the library squad girls participate in a lesson plan called Caption It! (Writing). Studies show that the lessons learned through past movements will help young people grow into adult advocates and changemakers. The best way to inspire teen girls is to provide them with stories to illustrate how girls have played essential roles in social movements fighting for a better and more equal world.

The participants will:

- Define service and social activism.

- Explore and discuss the young advocates featured in the book to understand the importance of advocacy work and motivate them to begin their careers.

The book Unbossed: How Black Girls Are Leading the Way will be read before the author's visit. This fantastic opportunity to create memories and enjoy having your book personalized by the author will be an experience like no other. The students will use their journals to document critical points from the book discussion and make notes for future reference.

Ms. Echols Science Skills Center Grades 9-12

Celebrate Black teachers and kids! This project supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of students are Black.

Equity Focus

At this school, more than 50% of students are Black, Latino, and/or Native American, and more than 50% come from low-income households. Learn how your donation to this school supports a more equitable education.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
