Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach U.S. History at a public high school that reflects the diversity of New York City. My students are thoughtful, curious, and opinionated, and are always ready to ask deeply important and insightful questions about the country we live in.

My students are also passionate activists and future leaders.

Most of them are students of color from low-income families who bring their lived experiences to the topics we study. It is crucial that we have texts available in the class that center diverse voices and experiences. It is also important that we have texts at a range of different reading levels to allow ALL students to have a point of entry for our learning and to help build critical literacy skills.

My Project

The accessible and engaging format of John Lewis's memoir will show my students the different ways that individuals fought for civil rights. Graphic novels are great ways for students of all reading levels to engage with reading, and this text will help create a foundation we can build off of in our study of the history of suffrage and voting rights today.

It can be easy for students to think of the Civil Rights Movement as the work of a few famous people, but this text gives voice and name to many lesser-known activists without whom the movement would never have achieved all that it did.

This text will show my students the power and importance of student activism and young voices, and I feel sure that we will have rich discussions about their potential and power today.
