My Students

"How important are the visual arts in our society? I feel strongly that the visual arts are of vast and incalculable importance. Of course I could be prejudiced. I am a visual art." - Kermit the Frog

My student population is extremely diverse and the student body alone represents over 40 different countries and we are located in our nation's capital.

We are a melting pot of cultures in a bilingual school which instructs in English and Spanish. We are also a school which educates and inspires students from pre-school all the way through fifth grade. These students come to school with a smile on their face every day. Each day that I come to work I find something new and interesting about each one of my students. One thing I have learned however, is that other than typical art supplies such as crayons, markers, colored pencils, and some paint, they have not experienced many other sorts of arts.

My Project

I have requested these supplies which I'm sure you're thinking: " What will she do with airbrushing paints with pre-schoolers?!" or "500 sheets of paper!? That's a lot!" So let me explain to you this project! Students will have the opportunity to create a marbled piece of paper with this project. It's an amazing project within which the airbrush paint floats on top of water when students drip it in the water. Students then place their paper on the surface of the water, where the paint will be absorbed into the paper and create a beautiful marbled design. Students at any age level can do this project because there is so much to learn, whether it is simply introducing the ideas of pattern and repetition. We will be talking about concentric circles, abstract art, or even bringing scientific terms into the art classroom such as surface tension!

" I messed up", "Mine is ruined", " I can't do this!" These are all quotes I hear daily from students who feel the pressure to master concepts and standards in our schools today.

The visual arts should be a class where students feel comfortable stepping outside their comfort zone knowing it is okay to make a mistake. This is a fail-proof project which will provide the confidence to try new things and realize art is where they are free to be themselves; whoever they want to be.
