Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm moving from 4th grade to 5th, where my students will be studying the geography and history of the US, but we have no social studies textbooks. I teach in a poor urban school district where I am not able to ask my students' families to supplement school resources.

It has been said that history IS geography, and learning the history of our wonderful nation means understanding its geography. Knowing the states' names, the regions of the US, the cities, the tremendously varied landforms and bodies of water...we teachers can instill a lifelong love of our country in the context of teaching students to read maps well, to understand different kinds of maps, to draw maps, the learn the language of geography...but we need supplies! Even social-studies textbooks (which we do not have) are inadequate for capturing students' interest by presenting facts and figures through varied and interactive activities.

American schoolchildren (and Americans in general) have been chided for their lack of geographical knowledge. I have one year to devote to US geography and history...and I want to teach my fifth-graders in a way that really invites them to understand the inter-connectedness of history and geography. In order to do this, my students need to be surrounded by maps, they need to have them in their notebooks, they need to touch them -- and learn to love them. I am requesting a carefully chosen collection of resources -- flashcards, maps, reference books -- that my students this year and in the future can work with every day.

DonorsChoose has helped me so much in the past. I often speak with other teachers who have been lucky enough to receive materials; we share ideas, and as a result I have learned so much from these colleagues whom I might not have interacted with. DonorsChoose not only has given me materials to teach; it has opened up my professional world and encouraged me to cooperate with other teachers who want to bring more to their students. I am a better teacher because of DonorsChoose. Thank you!
