I realized that if we are going to discuss any international situation in the classroom, students would need to know where in the world that situation is taking place.
Students in my Model United Nations elective class research their assigned country as they prepare to do a Model UN simulation. I want them to get to the point where they will have an immediate recall of their country's location without having to look it up on a map. One of the best ways for students to learn and retain new knowledge is through hands-on activities. Although there are computer programs they can use to help them study regional maps, I don't think anything replaces the tactile experience of placing countries in their correct spaces in a puzzle. If we're able to bring these puzzles into the classroom, it is my hope that we can use class time and these map puzzles to learn about the countries and perhaps turn it into a game or race to inspire my students to know their geography. This way, when they begin their debate on an international topic, they will know who their country's neighbors are and who they need to speak to in order to make an alliance.
