My Students

It's a fact of life. Four-year-old's like to touch stuff! Feeling, moving, and manipulating objects is actually one of the most effective ways they learn, as well.

I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!

They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development. I strive to provide a developmentally appropriate, multi-modal learning environment for my students. Lessons that combine listening and speaking with hands-on activities are what my young learners crave and their brains require.

My Project

The sets of Counters (Dog & Cat, Frog & Turtle, Kids, Giant Bugs, etc.) will be utilized for sorting, counting, graphing, patterning, and other math activities. An added benefit of the counters is how they stimulate children's language. With little prompting, they talk to each other (and sometimes to themselves!) about their colors, sizes, and other details. Descriptive and comparative language flow. Even my more reluctant speakers open up. The magnetic puzzles, mazes, balls, and discovery board present science concepts while building fine motor development. The materials also incorporate math and language skills. Matching activities are a mainstay of Pre-Kindergarten. The Sorting Centers, Find It! Vocabulary Folder Games, and Let's Go Shopping Counting Games capitalize on this while providing opportunities for students to work hands-on independently, with a partner, or in small groups.

My young learners will eventually be faced with worksheets and flashcards, but that's a very small part of our Pre-K experience.

One of the best ways for my students to develop their brains, build language and math skills, and prepare for the years ahead is by integrating hands-on materials throughout the day. Manipulatives, magnets, and matching activities are a must!
