Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 11th and 12th grade math in a public school in the Bronx. With our diverse population and huge range of learning needs, it quickly becomes obvious that we as teachers must find multiple different ways to reach the students and make the mathematics come alive. For example, suppose a goal is to simplify the expression "3x + 2x." There are many students who will continue to struggle with this task no matter how many times they are taught the rule. In this proposal, I am asking for a set of materials that will help provide visualizations and representations for my students. These materials help answer the students' questions, such as "How can I add '3x' and '2x' if I don't even know what 'x' is?" This materials kit provides pieces that can act as "x" (and "x squared", 1, 2, and so on…) and therefore put some sort of context behind the seemingly abstract tasks that they are trying to perform. Most of the resources in the manipulitives kit and the origami paper will be used in our upcoming geometry unit. Students retain experiences more than being told information. Therefore, we spend much of our time in class creating meaningful experiences. In geometry especially, a large portion of time is spent building various things. One example is a self-made pocket protractor. This simple but useful tool containing angles that the students have constructed can be made with any piece of square paper. I have found that origami paper works very nicely. And there are many more examples of uses than the one outlined above. In the past, I have been lucky enough to work with some of the materials included in this kit. They have been overwhelmingly successful and really help to engage the students in meaningful ways. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
