My Students

When you step into my first grade classroom, you will find a community of children that cares deeply about each other and the things they are learning. Our classroom is located in south Harlem, and almost all of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch.

My first graders model kindness, compassion, and teamwork as they share and listen to each others' ideas in morning meeting, work as a team on a Lego structure, or take turns playing a math game as partners.

All the while there is cheerful, diligent hum about the room as they pick out new books to read, stretch out words in a writing piece, or work through a tricky math problem. These first graders have opened their hearts and minds to each other and to new ideas, new challenges, new discoveries, and new adventures.

My Project

Making learning equitable for our remote learners is a priority for us in 1st grade at our school. Before COVID, all students had the opportunity to use math manipulatives (or tools) to make abstract math concepts more concrete and real to them. This is particularly helpful as students learn place value. They build two-digit numbers with unifix cubes, making groups of tens and loose ones, and practice adding and subtracting these numbers.

Unfortunately, our remote students don't have access to these powerful tools.

While we have provided links for virtual cubes, flipping back and forth between the unifix cube screen and assignment is difficult for young children using iPads. And touching the cubes through a screen isn't as transformative as being able to build these numbers with their own two hands.

Imagine how powerful math for remote students could be if all students had materials like these in front of them. Students would be able to follow along with their teachers during live zooms and work through the math problems. Teachers can better assess if students understand place value by looking at their unifix cubes and coaching them towards using the materials.

I hope you will help me in supporting our young mathematicians by giving them the tools they need to succeed this year!
