Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a wonderful ETK through 6th grade elementary school in South Los Angeles. The school is a Title I school with the majority of the student population being eligible for free or reduced lunch. It is a diamond in the rough.

Our students enjoy learning new concepts, or building on previous concepts, through simple activities such as arts and crafts as not many of them have the opportunity to do these outside of school.

My role at my school is to provide foundational skills intervention to students in all grade levels, especially in grades Kinder through 3rd. I have found that I can meet various foundational skills needs through crafts.

My Project

My students are eager to learn the letters and their corresponding sounds. The use of manipulatives supports both visual and kinesthetic learners. Due to being at a school with limited funds for extra materials, I am not able to purchase enough manipulatives for each student to use. This laminator will allow me to laminate manipulatives for my students to use over and over during foundational skills instruction.

Manipulatives support visual and kinesthetic learners with the concept of manipulating sounds; this is an important skill for learners to master in their reading journey.

My students will be able to use these manipulatives at home for distance learning, or at school during small group instruction. Due to the current pandemic, it is important for each student to have a set of manipulatives regardless of whether they are learning remotely or on campus. By having the laminator, I will be able to create a set of manipulatives for each student.

Being able to give each student a set of manipulatives to support foundational skills will support early literacy skills my students that will lead my students down the path of reading.
