My Students

"Manipulative Mania" is how I want my classroom math time to be! My new group of kindergarten students are so eager to learn, learn, learn! One of my biggest goals is to surround them with the materials to be able to do just that: LEARN!

I teach kindergarten in one of the fastest growing areas in South Carolina.

We are a neighborhood school where many children walk to and from school. In reaction to the economy, we are seeing more and more working parents, even some with multiple jobs.

My Project

Research has shown us that the kindergarten children I teach learn best from hands-on experiences...in any subject! The biggest obstacle I face currently and will continue to face next year is the lack of math manipulatives. To be able to understand that 2+2=4, the children first need to have counters in their hands and concretely see that when they have 2 here and 2 there...putting them together makes 4. It is imperative that I provide my students with the materials to be able to learn math from a concrete place. It is only then that they are able to move deeper into the abstract. I am requesting a set of manipulatives that can be sorted by one or more elements (color, size, etc), patterned, added and subtracted, just to name a few! The possibilities are endless!

Think of the many ways you use math everyday and then think back to how you learned it. These children need a strong foundation, and that starts in my classroom.
