My Students

We are a school for ETK-8th grade students. We are located near inner city of Los Angeles. We have a population of approximately 400 students all receiving free and reduced lunch. All of our students have just spent the past year and a half at home learning through a computer instead of in a classroom with their peers.

We view each child as an important and contributing member of his or her family, community, state, nation, and world.

Instruction is standards-based, project-based, and community-based, with technology integrated into our efforts to bring the world closer to each child’s home. In addition, we work to educate our students to preserve, protect, and conserve natural habitats, species, and precious resources.

My Project

My students are visual and kinesthetic learners. This means that they learn best through seeing and playing with objects. By having hands-on base-ten blocks, the students will be able to see how place value, addition, subtraction, and the beginning of multiplication and division work. We are making do with drawings, but after a year of online academics, giving the students tangible items to work with would be such a help!

With these manipulatives, I expect to see my classes number sense sky rocket!

I would partner my students up so they would be working together to manipulate the blocks or dice and problem solve together. Not only does this improve their math skills, but it will also improve their communication and collaboration skills. When we're not using these items for lessons, we can use these items for math games during small-group time.
