My Students

Every day we start off by working in small groups or doing partner work. We do this to practice and refresh the skills taught the day before. What better way to work on math by working with manipulatives. Some of my students NEED manipultives to learn, while others just enjoy using them!

I teach two 3rd grade math classes (40 students) everyday.

They are great kids that actually enjoy coming to my math class. With 3rd grade being the grade where testing really starts, it is hard to keep them enthusiastic towards math. However, they are still in it to win it. They have the best attitudes to do all the hard work I make them do. I teach at a Title I school, where most of my students receive free or reduced price lunch and many of my kids don't have the same opportunities that others may. Bringing math to life for them is all I want to accomplish.

My Project

We will use the flash cards to strengthen our multiplication fluency. Multiplication is a foundational skill in 3rd grade. We use it as a "spring board" to teach division, area/perimeter, and fractions. Learning multiplication facts can be time consuming. Even though we teach different strategies to solve multiplication all third graders should have their facts memorized by the end of the year. The flash cards will help partner groups practice and quiz each other on these facts. I am also requesting the fraction number lines for student use and demonstration. Fractions can be a very difficult concept to master, but when you also throw in fractions greater than one, it is something every year I see my students struggle with. These write and wipe fraction lines will allow students to take a hands-on approach to learning fractions.

These donations will help me add some much needed support into an area that needs a hands-on approach.

Students thrive when they can help each other learn and be apart of that process. I feel that donating the flash cards and card decks will also help with progressing student fluency with math facts.
