Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm a third-year librarian at a middle school and am thrilled students are back on campus full time. They are kind, good listeners and truly eager to learn. After 18 months of online or hybrid learning, they are excited to come to the library and check out new books. They are especially interested in realistic fiction, manga and graphic novels.
This is truly a great school community.
When I have collaborated with classroom teachers I am continuously amazed by how engaged students are. Since our return, it's been great interacting with students again and encouraging them to visit the library and read!
My Project
After more than a year of virtual learning, the students at my school are yearning for physical books! The library has never been busier and I love being able to find that perfect book for each student. Books can be an escape for students - a time to forget what's going on in the world and enjoy a story.
Manga, especially, are flying off the shelves!
I receive requests almost daily for more popular manga titles and the books frequently have holds on them. It's exciting to be able to fill in gaps for titles that are missing. There are also requests for more LGBTQ+ and romance stories. The look on my students' faces when I'm able to tell them I have these books is relief mixed with joy.
The other DonorsChoose campaigns I've created have focused on diverse books for literature circles in classrooms. This campaign is purely for enjoyment (though I'm sure my students will still learn a thing or two)!
