Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students at our school are a special group of middle school students. If you have ever met a middle school student then you know that often they are filled with an amount of energy and curiosity that, if tapped, could power a small town. Many of my students' families struggle to support their child's well being and significant numbers of my students are recent immigrants. Our school is faced with meeting the needs of a diverse student population that is consistently struggling financially and academically at-risk.
This has not hampered our students' eagerness and desire to learn and our teachers' devotion to teaching, but our school needs as much help as it can get.
Many of these students struggle to make it to class on time because they are trying to get their younger siblings ready for school. Many of my students are often a major caregiver for their younger siblings.
My Project
I've always been a lover of books. Comic books made me the reader that I am. Recently I've taken on a reading intervention class with a lot of students who don't share our love of books. I'm going to assume that if you are reading this then you also love turning the page of a good book.
I've noticed that a lot of my students love manga and they can't get enough of them.
I'm trying to build my library so that those books make it into the hands of my struggling readers.
A lot of these struggling readers don't believe they can actually read and I believe these funny little books can help them. It's my hope that they ignite a spark in them that gets them to read more and to reflect on that reading.
