This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I'm a third-year librarian at a middle school and am thrilled students are back on campus full time. They are kind, good listeners and truly eager to learn. After 18 months of online or hybrid learning, they are excited to come to the library and check out new books. They are especially interested in realistic fiction, manga and graphic novels.

This is truly a great school community.

When I have collaborated with classroom teachers I am continuously amazed by how engaged students are. Since our return, it's been great interacting with students again and encouraging them to visit the library and read!

My Project

Graphic novels and manga are sometimes dismissed as 'not really reading.' However, I've found that these books are often the first foray into reading for many students. Manga are serialized, and students still learn about plot and character development while often reading dozens of books. I have students visiting the library every day in order to check out the next installment. That's dedication!

Reading is important!

As a librarian I feel lucky to be able to provide students with books THEY want to read, and not what a curriculum is telling me to provide.

Graphic novels still tell serious stories, but in a way that is more child-friendly and digestible. Kids, especially now, have so much going on. I want to give them books they can relate to and have the time to actually read. With sports, academics, and other responsibilities, a huge novel can seem daunting. A graphic novel feels like something they can handle, even with everything else.
