My Students

My school is a Head Start/Pre-K Counts Program in a bilingual school that connects with the School District. Many of our families come from diverse backgrounds; cultures, languages, religions, and family make-ups. When parents meet me, their expectation for their children usually is to learn the basics: letters, numbers, shapes, and colors. To parents’ surprise, when their children are ready to move up to kindergarten, they have also learned how to manage their emotions when dealing with a difficult situation, whether it be a dispute amongst a peer; or what to do if a pile of blocks fell over on accident.

When my preschool students, 3-5 year olds, walk into my classroom, they are immediately greeted with hugs and smiles.

Considering common distractions, such as tablets, phones, and tv, my competition is to be more engaging and interesting than the games on their electronic devices.

Because child’s play is their work, it is my job to ensure a fun and safe environment, with lots of age-appropriate, hands-on activities, games and toys. Essentially, they would meet goals such as; social-emotional, physical, language, arts, and cognitive.

My Project

Children are visual and auditory learners so having a small and large timer to see how long they have to play, or how long they have for centers, or how long nap time or lunch will ease some anxiety or tension they may have. Also, the bean bags will give our students a comfy and safe place to sit while slowing down their play during reading or down time. The emotional puzzles will help the students have many conversations about regulating their own emotions; whether it be scared, sad or mad.
