My Students

My second-grade students are creative, curious boys and girls who love to play and imagine. At such a young age, they are still so excited to learn about the world around them. We are a rural school with a high population of low-income students. Many of the students have families that are struggling both financially and personally. My classroom is a full-inclusion classroom and several children have special needs. It is my goal that our classroom will be a place where each child is seen and heard and know that they are a valued part of a community.

My Project

The best way for children to learn is by "living" into their learning. My goal is to create a "Mercantile Store" in our classroom where children will earn play money by doing jobs and meeting classroom expectations, such as returning homework and completing assignments. Students will then be able to shop each week at our classroom store with the money they have earned and saved.

Having a classroom store will provide a two-fold benefit for students of learning how to calculate and manage money, as well as providing an incentive to earn money by doing extra jobs and meeting classroom expectations.

We will use the cart to organize the items by price. We will use the many items purchased through this project as merchandise. We will use the paper money, as well as coins that I already have in the classroom to earn and save and spend. I believe that by having the children use money in a hands-on and highly motivating way, they will learn the denominations, as well as how to add and subtract the coins and bills in a much more effective and relevant manner. It is also a good experience for them to have a real-life scenario of budgeting and saving money.
