Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love making music by singing or playing an instrument. Many have yet to experience the art of musical theatre and the story telling that it involves. Musical theatre, like the opera and musicals, will improve my students reading comprehension through studying the libretto.

The music class showing the weakest performance in reading as evidenced by the least number of students meeting high standards on the FCAT 2.0 reading assessment is the chorus.

There are a total of 18 students, with three at a Level 1, and five at a Level 2. The three Level ones are in the lowest 25%. Our school is a Title I school with a "D" classification. This year's theme is "One School, One Goal". The school is located in the South Dade area serving nearly 600 students in grades 6-8. 82% of the learners receive free lunch meals, a small population are Limited English Proficiency, 24% receive services through Special Education. Demographics demonstrate a varied student body consisting of 50% of the learners are black, 40% Hispanic, 7% Anglo, 1% Asian, 0.4% Indian and 1% are multi-racial.

My Project

Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou? What dreadful luck that you would have the name of Montague, a name so despised by my family. (William Shakespeare). Today, Juliette would not have to utter those words from a balcony. She would merely text Romeo from her bedroom and he would have Tweeted the world on his whereabouts like the average celebrity. The latest trends in technology have allowed teachers to accent lessons using various websites and software. The most effect literacy building activity, which helps to develop math, reading and writing skills, has been introducing the opera to middle school students. Adding technology, like the downloading tunes to student iPods/MP3 players will bring the operas and musicals to the 21st century. Using programs like Discovery Education also transforms classrooms and inspires teachers with engaging content, to fully engaged students in reading the stories, characters, settings, costumes, orchestral music, and actual singing.

This project will allow me to use every resource to broaden students' musical and cultural experiences, and continue students regular attendance to the Florida Grand Opera's full dress rehearsals.

Opera FunTime books are provided, along with free dress rehearsal tickets. Students ask to attend the opera because they love attending such a grand events at the cultural arts center. More importantly, students dress in formal attire. Students will also attend live Broadway musical production.
