My Students

The great educational theorist Jean Piaget said that "the business of children is play," and we play games and songs all day long in music class. My students are joyful, creative, and energetic, and it's time to get them the instruments they deserve.

Our school is a vibrant, close-knit K-8 community with kids who are invested in and motivated by music.

We have over 37% of the 6-8 student body enrolled in band, and all 300 K-5 students get music class weekly. It is a school where 68% of the student body qualify for free/reduced lunch (well above the district average of 44%). Because we are a small school in a very large district that has just added 9 new music programs without adding any money to the budget for new instruments, we are doing everything we can but have fallen short so far of providing adequate musical instruments for these kids. This is where you come in!

My Project

Right now my students mostly sing in class because we do not have enough instruments. We have some old, busted up percussion instruments that were not high-quality to begin with that are left over from the music program they had here years ago, but we only have a few mallet percussion instruments. With a class set of these glockenspiels, grades K-5 can participate in the Mallet Madness curriculum that I have taken workshops in but don't yet have the instruments to teach. These glockenspiels are especially cool because they are color-coded to correspond to boomwhacker colors - they have been working with boomwhackers and I color the notes to correspond, so these glockenspiels fit right in with the work they've already been doing.

With these instruments, 300 students all the way from age 5-11 will get a head start on note reading and keyboard skills.

They will have a great time and be very motivated to play the new instruments, and will build skills that can in time transfer to play instruments like marimba, piano and xylophone. They will have success and fun playing on real instruments so that they are more motivated to continue studying music through middle school and beyond. Please help these wonderful kids!
