My Students

With a set of biographies about Malcolm X, my class can see the fire of the Civil Rights Movement taking a leadership position during a time when it was lethally dangerous to stand up for such a position. To appreciate King, you must appreciate Malcolm X and how they impacted the movement together.

Our students are not average.

They look at kids that go to school seven hours a day and scoff. They snicker at their friends who have no homework. They know that to get to college from their neighborhood requires uncommon dedication. So, they go to school 10 hours a day and do another hour or two of homework a night. And as their teacher, I need to push them with innovative techniques and engaging content material. The best part of teaching at our school is also the most challenging: making a ten hour day into a fun, and highly educational ten hour day.

My Project

With a powerful autobiography from one of the greatest leaders in American history, our students can engage in a meaningful debate about the virtues, and drawbacks, of non-violent resistance. Debate is a powerful tool to draw students into deeper, more critical thinking, and the Civil Rights Movement is a great conduit to make them think about their role in improving our society. Thanks to Donorschoose, I already have Martin Luther King biographies and by putting together a debate about two brilliant leaders, I am already salivating about the potential for the depth of learning we can get two. With such powerful books to drive our learning, there is no limit to what we can accomplish in this important unit.

Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.

Malcolm X At our school, we live by this quote, as it is painted on our walls, and reflected in our classrooms. With the resources that this project can provide, you can help us achieve our goal of creating the next generation of civil rights leaders.
