This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"One child, one teacher, one pen, and one book can change the world." These words, spoken by Malala Yousafzai as she addressed the United Nations, will be our motto for the rest of the school year.
I teach in a small K-8 school in the Bronx, with only one class per grade.
Many of the students that I will be teaching in the 6th grade have grown up together in this school, knowing each other since Kindergarten, they are quite a tight-knit group! The newcomers are embraced easily by this friendly batch, and quickly join in all the fun. My upcoming class is full of talented and boisterous individuals, who enjoy group work, are curious about learning, love being a part of something bigger than themselves, and want to make a difference in the world.
My students come from all kinds of multicultural backgrounds, which allows them to be open minded when listening to and learning from one another. Having such an array of perspectives encourages my students to look beyond their differences and concentrate on what they have in common.
Our school is fairly small, and even though the building itself does not have a gymnasium, auditorium, or playground, we make the best it!
My Project
My students will need a class set of the young readers edition of "I Am Malala" by Malala Yousafzai. We will be doing a lot of shared reading this school year. Every day, we will read as a group, with partners, and independently. By having multiple copies of our books, students will be able to follow along when I read out loud for the class, they will be able to read with a partner and discuss their ideas about the events and social issues within this memoir, and they will be able to continue reading on their own, as they will be completely enthralled by Malala's story.
Having individual copies of the book for each student allows them to move along at their own pace -- with topics as important as the ones Malala discusses, I want them to be able to stop and think about these ideas, issues, and problems that plague our current world, while also taking into consideration how even in seemingly hopeless circumstances, one person can take a stand and give us hope.
All children should believe that they can make a difference in this big, big world around us.
But many do not feel it's possible until they see a real-life example of someone their own age take it upon themselves to do something brave. We need children to believe! Something as simple as having their own copies of an inspiring memoir, being able to it read at their own pace, and sharing the ideas they learn with others can help plant that seed in their hearts and minds.
