This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kids love to explore, try out new things, touch, listen, and learn. Boomwhackers are perfect instruments to help them do just that! Boomwhackers are made to be tapped, struck, smacked, and bounced. No matter where you strike it, it makes music!

I'm fortunate to work with about 470 brilliant, elementary students on a daily basis.

We go to a large urban school in a fairly low-income neighborhood. The vast majority of my students come from families where English is not their main medium for communication and yet they strive to excel in math and reading and are fluent in both languages. Though they come from a low SES background, they are innovative and creative, not letting boundaries stop them. Music gives my students an outlet to create and innovate and takes hold of their attention. Their eyes light up when they can take music making into their own hands and create something absolutely new.

My Project

Boomwhackers are lightweight, colorful, plastic tubes that are tuned to certain pitches. They are sometimes used in professional groups to create spectacle pieces (just check out anything by Plastic Musik on YouTube) but are often used by Music teachers to teach fundamental concepts of rhythm, harmony, and melody. Boomwhackers are perfect for the elementary music classroom because they're relatively inexpensive, durable, and are made to be "whacked!" These instruments really help with ensemble building and listening because each student only gets one note to play in the song. Maybe you've played in a handbell ensemble before where you only got one or two notes to play. This uses the same basic concept but updates it and allows students to beat out a common melody.

Students gain so much from actually being able to pick up an instrument and play.

Boomwhackers allow students to work together in an ensemble and make music as a group. They also reinforce concepts of steady beat, harmony, and rhythm. Most of all, Boomwhackers are fun. They give the kids a chance to relax, have a blast, and make music together.
