This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year I want students to think and act like scientists. The best way to motivate students to act like scientists is through hands - on labs and experiments where they get to test out or model science concepts.

I teach 7th grade science to around 90 students in an urban low income school.

My students are enthusiastic learners who thrive on hands on activities. They love completing science labs and getting to think and act like scientists. My students leave behind tough home lives when they come to school. But our school is community where these students feel safe and are able to learn.

My Project

I have really struggled for the past few years to get my students to understand the concepts of topographic maps. It is a difficult concept to teach because students need to visual landforms being represented as a 2-D map. It is a concept that can be challenging for even me at times. Being able to use the contour map kits to create topographic maps will make the information more accessible for my students. Students will be able to create a topographic map for a volcano that they can see as they are creating the 2-D map. This will really improve my students' understanding of these concepts!

The contour map kits will make teaching topographic maps which is a difficult concept for students to master a lot easier for students to understand.

Students will enjoy using these materials and will make the learning a lot more fun than just using paper maps!
