My Students

I teach a vibrant group of transitional kindergarten students. They love to learn and are excited by new things. I am always looking for innovative ways to engage my class. I cannot stand to repeat the same activities year after year, so it's always an adventure in my classroom.

I am nearly half way through my twelfth year as a classroom teacher.

I have worked at two different schools, though both have been in the same urban neighborhood. I began my career as a second grade teacher, but have since taught the entire spectrum of elementary grade levels, from pre-kindergarten up to fifth grade. This is currently my fifth consecutive year teaching transitional kindergarten. During these past twelve years I have been constantly developing and growing professionally. I earned National Board Certification as an Early Childhood Generalist, and earned a Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership and Policy, and a California Administrative Credential.

My Project

I would love to attend a three-day summit on using iPads in the classroom. My school has used its technology budget to purchase an iPad cart. It will contain a classroom set of iPads that will be set up in a lab for us to visit and use. I need to attend this summit in order to prepare me to make these iPads meaningful for my five-year-old students. I want to learn more about what iPads can do and specifically how they can be used to boost academic achievement in a fun and engaging way. Currently, we have one classroom iPad, and my students are constantly vying for their turn to play educational games and apps. I know that there is so much more that I can do with this single iPad that just isn't currently part of my knowledge base. I can only imagine what will be possible with the class set that will arrive soon. The opportunity to spend three days learning new skills that will directly benefit my students is a dream come true.

I truly value professional development, and I believe that it is important for teachers to be continuous learners and to constantly hone their craft.

Still, most professional development opportunities benefit students indirectly. If I am able to attend this iPad summit, it will benefit my students directly and immediately. I will be able to take the skills I learn straight back to the classroom and use them with students.
