My Students

I teach a unique program at an inner city. It is called math/technology, designed to engage students in mathematics beyond the books and showcase the potential that mathematics has in the outside world. I would like to create a strong STEM foundation with the addition of an engineering component.

The students are fantastic.

They are ethnically diverse, excited to learn, and inquisitive in their approach to mathematics. I service students in all elementary grades and with the addition of the new common core materials students are starting to really think outside the box and focus on problem solving rather than strict calculation. I often get questions about the importance of the mathematics we do and there aren't enough hands on resources, outside of the computers, to show students the potential of mathematics further down the road when they decide on their career. The students are always eager to create with new technology and, because resources are somewhat limited, we sometimes have difficulty finding the means to provide for them. We have created an atmosphere in our schools where mathematics is at the forefront of developing critical thinking and problem solving skills which can be used for any subject across the curriculum.

My Project

We are lucky to have been equipped with laptops for the entire class and a portable STEM lab to go along with them. The computers have KNex software built into the system already. The students would using the Computer Control KNex kit to create different models and program the capabilities on the computers. It will all be incorporated into my curriculum and the students will be provided with time to not only engage with the software and machines, but also question, investigate, discuss and compile data in relation to the mathematics that connect with the activities. It is the perfect opportunity to develop engineering ideas and interests into the growing STEM education in our school.

The project is meant to help take the new steps in applying the mathematics they learning through the common core curriculum.

It gives them an opportunity to be creative and see how math is an integral part of the engineering world as we are becoming a much more technologically based society.
