My Students

My students are a wonderful group of middle years pre-teens. Many of them were born and raised in the inner city. They have a lot of energy and are willing to learn if they are challenged. In order to fully engage them, they need to have a variety of learning experiences. Over the past three years, the students haven't had a consistent math instruction in the upper grades. As a result of this, they lack the confidence in their reasoning abilities.

The students are not quick to accept just what adults tell them, but to question the rationale and reasons behind the tasks.

I love this inquisitive nature. We channel this with positive questioning techniques, so it isn't seen as defiance or disrespect. Their eagerness to learn is what keeps me going. It is because of them that I come to work every day and do what I do with a smile on my face.

My Project

When students have multiple entry points for learning and exploring mathematical concepts, they grasp the skills better. My middle years students mainly struggle with fractions and multiplication. They are afraid to take risks during the lessons.

During small group instruction, students are more willing to take risks and the teacher can reach them on their levels.

By using dry erase boards, a dry-erase easel and dry erase markers, they can practice writing math responses and doing quick checks with the teacher.

In order to create this learning space, we need to purchase the manipulatives like fraction cubes and base ten blocks for the students to explore math.
