Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I have one goal in mind: to help my students be more comfortable and happy at school - and at home - so they can focus on their learning. I believe the items I have requested will help me accomplish this.

100% of my students are recent immigrants, and many are refugees and/or unaccompanied minors from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Columbia, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti.

Beyond teaching English and social studies, my classroom is a refuge where my students can be themselves; where they are known and they are loved. Throughout our time together, my students become empowered to share their experiences - challenges, hopes, and fears. I believe my students draw strength from one another's shared experiences, and develop a sense of purpose and motivation for learning together. This can only happen when their basic needs are met, and they know how much I care.

I have requested several items that will help me carry forth my goal in this regard. First, winter is coming, so I have requested two small space heaters. Next, I have requested a speaker. My students absolutely love music (they can dance!) as it connects them to their culture, and to one another. I have also requested basic classroom supplies such as stationery (I believe in teaching young people to write letters!), Clorox wipes, Kleenex, tape, and paper towels. Next, every school year I make home hygiene kits, which is why I have requested Tide pods, soap bars, and feminine napkins.
