This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a high needs public NYC high school focused on preparing students in hospitality and tourism careers.

Our small school is comprised of around 350 students who are all participating in some form of remote learning currently, during the pandemic.

Many of these students come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced lunch. We have a large population of students who are classified as special education and/or ESL and work hard to support their needs.

Students often come into HSHM not having all the skills they need to be successful in high school. These students are supported through after school and Saturday tutoring and through the work of their very dedicated teachers and staff.

My Project

Students have devices like tablets but no stand or keyboard to utilize for doing their coursework. Currently, students must type using their fingers on a touchscreen, which takes time away from when they could be learning and working on assignments. They also have no stand to rest their tablets on, so they are using create solutions like stacked books or simply holding the device during Zoom call classes.

These cases, with included keyboards, would allow students to more easily and productively use their DOE-borrowed device while on remote learning platforms, during classes, and while completing assignments.

Without these resources, students are spending unnecessary time and energy, which is taking away from their own learning opportunities.
