My Students

I teach 7th- and 8th-grade students in a public K-8 school in West Harlem, New York. My school serves a high poverty population with almost 100% of students obtaining free lunch and coming from various backgrounds - emerging English language learners, kids with special needs and many other challenges that have unfortunately fallen upon them that no child should have to take on. Given this, these students need and rightfully deserve a welcoming classroom environment with supplies and books for their needs and interests.

I teach humanities to these students and try to look for any way to motivate my students to read, a skill needed in our society and one of the main reasons why I decided to become a teacher.

As I start my fourth year of teaching, I hope to create an environment that strongly fosters learning and reading for my students. My students are terribly bright and deserve the best for them to realize and achieve their fullest potential. I ask that you contribute to my classroom and help aid in my goal of turning these kids into lifelong learners and readers!

My Project

These books and bins will continue to add upon the classroom library that I strive to make as engaging and interesting as possible. Many books in my current library are old, worn, and simply not appealing to the population I serve. In order for my students to really enjoy reading and learning, there has to be an inviting place for them to do that in. The inspirational posters, comfy chair and rug can all help foster a warm learning space that fosters education. The dry erase board can aid in my modelling of skills and strategies for my students before they dive into their own independent and guided reading.

My students go through enough trauma outside of school; therefore my classroom library and learning spaces could, and should, be the welcome escape they need to dive into literary and historical texts.

My students are terribly bright and deserve a safe space where they can continue to build upon the skills they already have in order to become even better well-read members of society. This project will only enrich and foster student engagement in my goals of increasing literacy and the love for it!
