My Students

As education policy changes, so do the expectations we have have of our students. As our state moves to Common Core standards, students are required to read at a much higher level than in years past. How are we to change reading instruction if all we have is the same old textbook?

My students are 8th graders in a small middle school in Florida.

They range from advanced readers to frustrated readers to readers with disabilities that need alternatives to the textbook. I currently have 24 students with some type of disability and another 15 who find reading difficult. These kids, however, aren't separated from my other students, but are in classes with on-level or high-achieving students. The worst thing that could happen to these reluctant readers is to feel isolated or less intelligent than the rest of the class. Add to this, I have 6 gifted students and another 14 high performers. It hard to find activities that appeal to the whole class while while isolating specific skills for struggling readers. The textbook does a good job with fiction but falls short in non-fiction, yet Common Core asks students to read overwhelmingly the latter. I need texts, specifically nonfiction, that will appeal to ALL students.

My Project

Scholastic magazines, and Upfront magazine in particular, are a well-respected source of non-fiction. Their articles are reflective of issues currently facing our world. In every magazine they have at least one article focused on a topic in history and one focused on a topic culturally relevant today. Many deal with civil rights and our changing country. The articles vary in length and have plenty of graphics and illustrations to help weaker readers follow along. The initial pages have short articles that are easy to read and good for highlighting specific reading skills, the feature articles are longer and provide more of a challenge, and the back pages have opinion pieces where both sides of an issue are examined. This resource is invaluable: interesting, challenging, and thought provoking, while still meeting all state guidelines.

Giving kids reading that they are interested in, that they really WANT to read, is a key component in turning non-readers into readers.

These magazines so that, but they do it in a way that doesn't bore the advanced students. It brings readers together, all of them learning about the world around them. Help me show kids that they can be part of that world through reading.
