This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are living and learning in a low-income neighborhood where they face numerous challenges. Unable to control what goes on in their lives outside of school, I try to make the most of their time at school by focusing on what I can do to maximize their learning.

In addition to the challenges they face within the community, they have the added challenge of being students with special needs.

Their main area of struggle is reading, which greatly affects their success in all areas. They need learning experiences that will help them develop the basic skills that are essential to their success.

My Project

Scholastic's Storyworks Jr. magazine will provide my students with high interest texts that are more aligned with their current reading levels. As struggling readers with special needs, they have great difficulty reading the textbooks adopted by our school district. Rather than frustrate them with lengthy, higher level texts that make reading a chore, they need exposure to text that will engage them while furthering their reading ability. In addition to helping them develop basic reading skills, my students will also learn about a variety of reading genres while applying different comprehension skills.

The Storyworks Jr magazine provides more than just text that my students can access.

The subscription also provides learning activities, lesson plans, and assessments. The magazine will also enable me to differentiate and maintain their engagement by providing access to videos, audio read alouds, and leveled versions of the articles.
