My Students

My students in our low-income, rural community are fun-loving, sweet, yet some of them struggle with engagement, especially when it involves traditional subjects or conventional approaches to education.

My students of wildly differing abilities thrive when they can collaborate on engaging activities, especially when I provide a teen-friendly environment for them to explore!

They love to laugh and move and think together, especially when I can show them the joy in learning academic subjects! School may not always be their natural, primary focus, but they are bright, confident, caring and excited to try new endeavors, especially when I can connect literacy to their lives in the real world. What can I say? I love them!

My Project

National Poetry Month comes and goes (every April, in fact), but good poems inspire us year round.

I seek two fun ways to engage my students with poetry: high interest, young adult books in the narrative verse genre and magnetic poetry kits with easels on which to create original works.

I will entice my reluctant poets with narrative verse books that appeal to their interests, such as first love and sports. I will also sponsor a magnetic poetry contest using some of these resources. We will award prizes for this contest, one of which will be a framed copy of the poem as a keepsake.

Poetry can fill our hearts, souls, minds, and imaginations. This project will make poetry more enjoyable and relevant to my learners so they can benefit from the gift of poetry.
