This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a high poverty neighborhood in south Philadelphia. We are an extremely diverse group - we speak 7 different languages at home, and are from many different countries!

My students are fantastic readers and writers, but struggle to connect with our outdated social studies curriculum.

I want to give them the opportunity to read engaging non-fiction and historical fiction texts on a variety of reading levels so they can find parts of history that speak to them. Help us make history to feel more relevant than it does in our 15-year-old textbook.

My Project

My students currently rely on a 15+-year-old textbook about Pennsylvania history. It gives us a bare-bones view of how our state came to be but doesn't offer any of the tangible details or compelling biographies that would make colonial life interesting and relevant for 10-year-olds.

We deserve to have diverse history texts that make history feel real for us.

I've tried to select books that reflect the diversity of the colonial experience, as well as ones that touch on the kinds of topics 4th graders find engaging. (Like - "how did they wash their clothes" Or, "What kinds of schools did they go to?")

I plan to use these texts as a themed set during independent reading and as the jumping-off point for end-of-year research projects. Hopefully, this will be the beginning of our colonial library!
