My Students

My students are fourth graders in a low income, semi-rural area. We currently have 10 classroom teachers, and about 22 students in each class. Our students are very eager and interested in learning. However, we do not have all the necessary manipulatives and supplies in order to meet the needs of all students in our school. We have been very fortunate to receive many new materials and manipulatives in previous years, but we still need more. Every student should have access to all of these materials daily.

My Project

Students will demonstrate application of measurement by constructing their very own ruler by making colored marks with markers at inches, half inches, quarter inches and eighth inches.

Then, students will use the self-made rulers to measure the length of various objects using these colored marks.

Students should be able to efficiently and accurately measure the length of objects in inches, half inches, quarter inches, and eighth inches. They should also understand what an inch is and be able to show where an inch is on a traditional ruler.

This Make Your Own Ruler Stem Lesson encourages young learners to explore measurement through a hands-on activity. They will be creating and utilizing their own manipulatives that can be used for mathematics and science curriculum throughout the school year.
