My class consists of 20 9th grade females reading at or below the 6th grade reading level. As 9th graders, my ladies are just beginning their journey of high school and young adult life. And as 9th graders reading well below their grade level, my ladies are reluctant readers and reluctant learners. I would like to provide these ladies with an opportunity to see the potential in their own lives by reading about other young ladies and men from many cultures who successfully stepped out on their own. The chosen novels (First Part Last, Where the Heart Is, Rules of the Road, Lupita Manana, Backwater, and Tiger Eyes) are by acclaimed authors and/or are honored as members of Oprah's Book Club or as Coretta Scott King Award recipients. My ladies will be reading these novels in small groups in order to share with the rest of the class a number of ways to approach the bumps and turns of their lives. We will be reading together the novel First Part Last to discuss how we as women handle problem solving in a different way from men, and allow them to explore what they would do if placed in a similar situation. Your assistance in fulfilling this grant will ensure the materials needed to help provide these young ladies with a foundation in problem solving skills and encouragement in confidently stepping out onto the path of success. They are our future. We need to prepare them for it!
