My Students

My students are located in the heart of a large, urban neighborhood. The total minority enrollment is 90%, the majority of them of Hispanic ethnicity (71.0%). 87% of the student body is economically disadvantaged, determined by the number of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Our school prides itself in giving them opportunities to shine in the visual and performing arts, media, and social justice and humanities projects, and giving them the tools needed to be college and career-ready.

My students are curious and creative, and they strive to contribute their talents to their community.

I wish to provide them a variety of opportunities that will encourage them to pursue their interests in STEAM-related fields and to continue to have a love and appreciation for math and science in the world.

My Project

Many of my students have never done coding before taking this class. So far they have explored block-based programming as an introduction, and next they will learn text-based coding with Python, a programming language used widely among today's developers, data scientists, and software engineers.

We are requesting headphones and audio splitters so that my students will have an engaging and unique experience with learning Python.

My students will be able to use headphones to test their programs as they create music on EarSketch, a Digital Audio Workstation that uses Python. Audio splitters will be needed to allow students to collaborate on shared projects, and simply to let them share their catchy tunes with their classmates! Their excitement for learning programming is already heard throughout the classroom and headphones and audio splitters will allow them access to a continued productive and engaging learning environment.
