My Students

Our music department's resources currently consist of 5, broken keyboards and 3 pairs of headphones.

My students attend an inner city school that was "borderline failing" last year.

They are predominantly of East Indian and South American background. Many have a strong interest in singing and rapping and are currently pursuing musical careers outside of school. Unfortunately, their attendance in school has suffered as a result. Last year, I created a Music Production Club in my school, that became very popular with the students. We saw many students returning to class so that they would be eligible to participate in the club. This is not surprising, as studio time can be very expensive.

My Project

My students will be engaged in a multi-disciplinary approach to music production that incorporates physics and mathematics. They will explore the MIDI protocol, used to control virtual instruments. With these keyboards, students will be able to add a plethora of sounds to their music and learn how to alter their performance in post production. They will also explore the nature of sound and apply that knowledge to capturing live audio.

Music has the power to change people.

It is science. It is math. It is art. It is expression. With these keyboards, each student will have access to a world of virtual instruments with which they can explore the science and art of sound recording.
