My Students

Imagine a computer lab of kids working on songs and videos without enough headphones to go around. We desperately need new headphones! Many of ours are broken or on their way out.

My students are in grades K-7.

Our school, a small charter school, is located in a low income area, and many of our families qualify for free/reduced lunch. Many of my students come from households without access to computers or internet. They are creative, and passionate about technology, but school is often the only place they learn technology skills. They often surprise me with how quickly they pick up new skills and create original works with the tools we are learning.

My Project

We just completed a long-term project on Digital Citizenship. My students created songs, videos, posters and comics to teach others about what they learned. Often, we did not have enough headphones to go around and many of the headphones have a broken earpiece, which makes song-editing very difficult. With new headphones, every student will have access to the tools they need to successfully complete their projects, which they will share with each other, with their families, and with the world through our student work website. In addition, when we are completing our research projects later in the year, my students often want to watch short biographies or listen to text being read to them. Without enough headphones to go around, this will mean that some students will not have this opportunity.

More and more of today's content being delivered through multimedia, it is vital that students become creators of content, not just consumers.

In addition, my students, who have less access to technology tools than many of their peers, need to be given opportunities to create multimedia projects in school that will prepare them for jobs and participation in the adult world as they mature.
