Help Ms. Ofstie

I am a sixth grade English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in a very poor area of Brooklyn, NY. My class consists of seventeen 11- to 12-year-old beginner English language learners. They come from all different countries, such as Mexico, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, Panama, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. They are the sweetest, loveliest, most respectful class I have ever had, and they deserve the world. Unfortunately, everything that they deserve is not often available to them. Many of them live in cramped quarters, in a small room with too many people and too few mattresses on the floor. They love school immensely, and don't enjoy weekends and vacations. School is their life, and they adore learning. We have read a couple of books by the author Anne Schraff. She has written literally hundreds of books that are at a fairly easy language level but deal with issues that are interesting to middle and high school students. My students love reading books by her, and they always tell me that they feel like they are watching a movie while we read her stories. That gave me the idea of making movies with my students based on the books we read. I would love to discuss the differences between books and movies with my class and develop scripts based on the books. I envision holding auditions for the actors and teaching the technical crew how to make scenery and operate a camcorder. Since I only have seventeen students, it would be very manageable for me to pull off such a wonderful activity. For that reason, I would love to have a camcorder for my class to record our movies. I see us shooting the movies, and then holding a Class Movie Fest after school one day to showcase all of our efforts. A gift such as this would not only benefit the students for a couple of hours or a couple of days, but would provide the kind of learning activity that everybody will remember for life. Having a camcorder would not be limited to only doing this project, but would also provide us with the opportunity to develop other projects, such as a video diary of our school for next year's incoming sixth graders, among other ideas. My students do not have access to this kind of technology in their homes, and would be completely blown away by it. I can't wait to see the looks on their faces when they realize that we can actually develop and shoot our own classroom movies. Please help make this dream of mine a reality for my children. The sixth graders and I thank you!
