We are a class of diverse third graders. The number of English language learner students is increasing with a decreasing median income yearly. Our school is a Leader in Me school where we are working to instill the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People into our learning habits as well as home lives. We are working extra hard to be proactive this year as we work to bridge the gaps created by the pandemic.
My Project
My third graders were finishing their first-grade year when the world shut down in March 2020 for the COVID pandemic pushing schools into our kitchens, front rooms, and bedrooms. Combine this with their second-grade year being in a hybrid of online and in-person my students struggle with changing expectations for movement during school. Small bodies have always struggled to sit still. I have been working to build a classroom that harnesses wiggles, but since the pandemic, I have discovered do not have enough flexible seating to fill the increased need for movement in my classroom. These wiggle chairs will help me get closer to my goal for a 1-to-1 ratio of students to flexible seating in my classroom.
