Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students I have the privilege of teaching are middle school, grade science students. These students include a large portion of ELL (English Language Learning) students and a large portion of the overall student population come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of the students have low basic understanding of nutritional content in the foods they eat and/or the importance of exercise.

Students at my school have 87 minute class periods so do not get a lot of movement during the school day.

In addition the foods they eat, even school lunches are precooked, microwaved, and full of added ingredients. When the low nutritional content of the students' diets are combined with sedentary lifestyles the impacts on their health and wellbeing are magnified.

I would like to introduce them to reading food labels and incorporate simple movement and food information to improve their long term wellbeing and mindsets regarding exercise (movement) and healthy food choices.

My Project

Movement in childhood helps to instill movement into adulthood and an overall healthier lifestyle. Many of our kids in my classrooms have a more sedentary lifestyle and are not physically active on a daily basis. Every child does not have the inclination or resources to engage in team sports.

However, Hacky Sacks are a fun and energetic way to get students moving and can be played alone or in groups.

This is a simple and low cost way to not only improve student movement overall but can also encourage group participation and teamwork. After we have discussed and learned about nutrition and movement students will be introduced to the sport of Hacky Sack. As a class we will practice the sport a few times then students will receive their personal Hacky Sack to take home and practice individually and/or in groups.
