Making Mental Health a Priority

My Students

This will be my second year as a junior high/high school counselor after being an intervention specialist for six years. I am so passionate about my position as our district strives to meet the social-emotional needs of our students.

In the school system where I teach, more than half of our students are low-income students.

More often than not, some of my students come to school without even their most basic needs being met. This typically means I need to make sure I have a variety of resources at my fingertips to be able to provide my students with everything they need to be able to learn and succeed. My goal is to set them up to be mindful, independent, contributing members to society.

My Project

At Liberty Local Schools, we are prioritizing mental health and the social emotional needs of our students now more than ever.

An Amazon Flex in each classroom would give our students the opportunity to listen to calming music and guided meditations throughout the school day, specifically during the Leopards LEAD period, which is designed the meet the individual needs of our students.

Mindfulness activities such as meditation have been proven effective in schools as it improves attention and behavior problems, and reduces anxiety in kids. Studies have also shown improved attendance, grades, and the ability to self-regulate.

In addition to meeting mental health needs, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have decided to transition our students at different times to reduce the number of students in the hallway at once.

Our current bell system is outdated and unable to set bells by classroom.

A new bell system would cost thousands of dollars, which isn't cost effective. The Amazon Flex would allow us to set multiple alarms to ring in each classroom throughout the day. This would reduce the number of students in the hallway to allow for more social distancing.

In addition to the alarm feature, the Amazon Flex has other features that are very beneficial for classroom use. The voice technology, "Alexa", can set timers, play music, read stories, help with math skills, vocabulary, play games, and even help with randomization.

These devices would help us tremendously during the pandemic, but can continue to be used throughout the years. Thank you for considering to support our initiative to keep students and staff safe, healthy, and happy at our high school!
