Making Mathematical Magic!

Help me give my students hands-on materials that are ideal for both developing their fine motor muscles and math concepts including shapes, numbers and colors. My students mostly all have developmental delays and need help building math skills.

My Project

I will use these materials to teach my prek students mathematical basics including color recognition, number identification, sorting, spatial awareness and shape recognition. The students I teach are inner city students who are from low income families and many of which have special education needs. Materials like magnatiles come in various shapes and colors and students learn how shapes fit together and learn the concept of magnetism. With counting coins, they learn how to count, quantify and 1-1 correspondence. With magnetic boards, they are able to use a vertical surface where they can practice magnetism and putting magnetic numbers in numerical order. With a light board, they use their imagination to create open-ended shapes and creations with a variety of colors and lights. With a marble run, they learn to build and fit the pieces together to and build the anticipation of watching the marbles roll down their creation! Playstix allows for children to build while using their very fine motor muscles to help aid them with skills like writing and cutting with scissors. Using play dough also helps build their motor muscles while experimenting with the different colors of the dough and building vocabulary to describe the texture and appearance of dough.

The majority of them have delays and have not yet had academic exposure, and math tends to be an area of high need as they usually don’t know their colors yet, so starting from scratch is essential!

They will also learn turn-taking, social skills, working in a group with these materials!
