My Students

I teach Geometry/Trig at a large high school in Northeast Wisconsin. Student abilities in my classes range from advanced freshmen in Geometry to some juniors and seniors who have a little more difficulties in math. The majority of my geometry students are sophomores. Three of my classes are co-taught with a special education teacher. Those classes contain a large number of students with special learning needs. Regardless of their ability levels all of my students want to be successful in math. I truly believe that with the right tools we can make mathematical connections for all students to feel confident in their mathematical abilities.

My Project

I was absolutely amazed by - and so very grateful for - the the support I received for my First Project. I have a wonderful start to my goal of helping all students make geometry connections through hands-on learning activities.

In Part 2 of this project I would like to add to those resources with some of the smaller, but still important detail items.

For example, I have small whiteboards for my classes but those need dry erase makers which need to get replaced often. I usually only buy cheaper black markers but I would love to have multi colored markers that kids can use to identify different parts of things with different colors. I would also like a classroom set of highlighters. We look at lots of diagrams, graphs and word problems in my classes and having a classroom set of different colored highlighters are great tools to help kids identify the important parts within the problems (also a great habit for them to establish for future classes.) Tape measures, chalk, protractors, yarn and clinometers will allow us to go outside and explore the Geometry in our world! For example, we can use these tools and our Trig skills to determine the height of our school which can lead us to problems such as finding the surface area of the building and then maybe determining the quantity of paint we would need if we wanted to paint the building.
