My Students

I teach Geometry/Trig at a large high school in Northeast Wisconsin. Student abilities in my classes range from advanced freshmen in Geometry to some juniors and seniors who have a little more difficulties in math. The majority of my geometry students are sophomores. Three of my classes are co-taught with a special education teacher. Those classes contain a large number of students with special learning needs. Regardless of their ability levels all of my students want to be successful in math. I truly believe that with the right tools we can make mathematical connections for all students to feel confident in their mathematical abilities.

My Project

In my years of teaching I've seen students struggle to visualize and make connections with the Geometric concepts that we are trying to learn. I have also seen that it can make a big difference in understanding if students can hold shapes in their hands, examine them, and manipulate them. When they are physically creating and manipulating shapes, lines, and angles, those things become less abstract and they can develop a deeper understanding of the geometric relationships that are at work.

I have carefully chosen resources that I believe will greatly assist all students in all of my classes to better understand geometric concepts.

These manipulatives can be used by every student to examine points, lines, slopes, 2 dimensional shapes and 3 dimensional shapes. Through these examinations they will better understand the basic relationships and connections which will then allow them to take things to a deeper level of understanding. This will benefit them greatly when we look at more abstract problems involving these geometric concepts.

Sometimes people think that these colorful manipulative are only for little kids but I have found that they can be great way to introduce a lesson. High school aged kids see them as a fun change of pace compared to paper/pencil work. The level of student engagement is much higher when they can use their hands and minds together to actually see and experience the geometric concepts that we are learning.
