Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in an area of low economic development. Over 90% of our students are growing up in poverty. Books and resources are scarce in their homes. But they come to school every day eager to learn and to apply their new skills.

We need to keep the learning fun for our little ones!

My Kindergarten students learn best if they can do activities that are hands-on. They learn by discovering how things work. I am not a worksheet teacher-in my class practice by doing!

My Project

Every day my Kindergarten students work in their math workstations. Each student has a partner and they work together to complete an activity that corresponds to the lessons we are learning in class.

Young children learn best by practicing things in a hands-on way.

My students need to count with manipulatives or compare numbers by rolling dice. Most of my students also LOVE to learn this way. It is fun to be able to discuss what they are learning and practice by playing games. I don't want my students to fear math, but to develop a passion for it. They end up seeing math everywhere and how important it is to develop these skills.

The more practice my students can get, the better foundation they will have for more challenging concepts as they grow. Who knows-you might inspire some future mathematicians!
