My Students

My seventh and eighth graders are students who are using mathematics to help make sense of the world around them.

They are learning about themselves and what it takes to solve a problem with every math equation they solve. My school is a project-based constructivist school where the students are given an opportunity to explore the world around them and make connections that relate to them. We speak more about the process than about the solution with a heavy focus on our class being a community, much like the school.

My Project

Having math manipulatives in the class would allow my students to dive in to the material. They will be able to see and feel what we are talking about in class and in doing so, they will become explorers who are looking for patterns, connections and meaning. Having these manipulatives will allow me to separate my students by their needs and give them the support or additional push that they need. I will be able to meet the needs of my kinesthetic learners who are at a disadvantage when they do not have hands on materials. Students will be able to use these materials to explore things like volume and surface area and come up with their own hypotheses of what things mean instead of being asked to memorize formulas.

Donations to this project will improve my classroom because students will be excited and curious to use the new materials.

Engaging their curiosity will encourage students to explore new things and that natural curiosity is what will lead to natural learning. This will change my students' lives because they will have a better chance of learning the skills and they will also regain a love for learning that will help them in all aspects of life.
