This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what your math instruction was like? Was it filled with worksheet after worksheet and fairly little real life application of the math you were learning?

I haven't actually met the kiddos that will benefit from your donation, but if they're anything like my last set of kids they're brilliant and eager to meet the expectations set for them.

According to the 1st grade team, the 40 students benefiting from this project love reading and being read to, are inquisitive, and are full of personality.

My Project

The bulk of the resources requested are books. These books will be the basis for math inquiry lessons that allow students to learn through problem solving. After reading a book, students will be asked to solve problems related to the events in the story. This will serve as a spring board for discussion on new math concepts. I have requested a set of dice for student use. The dice will be used to create take home game packs for homework. Instead of boring practice sheets, students will take home games to play with each other and family members. The games, like Race to 100, will force students to practice their flexible computation strategies. The other items listed in this project are general math resources. The hundreds chart, place value chart, ten frames, place value cards, and calculators will be used in instruction and small group activities.

I have already seen the impact of integrating literacy in math with last year's class.

My kids constantly asked to read the "math books" and were highly engaged in lessons that included literacy integration. By the middle of the year, students were proudly contributing information learned from the books to our lessons. Your donation will double my math library and allow me to send home game packs for student practice. It will help me increase my impact on my kids.
