Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We are your future mathematicians! In our second grade classroom, I teach all subjects to twenty-one terrific little students in a high need school district.

Even without many of the basics, my students are eager to learn everything--especially math. It is a heavily anticipated subject in our class. They want to know it all, from money to time to addition and subtraction. However, sometimes it is hard to maintain their enthusiasm when we have a lack of materials needed for their learning to occur. For example, when we have our unit on time, students create their own clocks from paper plates--which is a fantastic project and is useful for a day or two. However, our unit lasts for three weeks, and throughout that stretch our paper plates take quite a beating. We need something sturdier that will withstand the rigors of second grade. Furthermore, the textbook our district uses for math has a few pages in every chapter dedicated to teaching students how to use a calculator. However, our school does not have calculators for the students to use for practice. Lastly, when we have math centers, many of the activities that the students use are paper and pencil activities that I have created myself. While the kids are always eager to work at their centers, other materials would engage them and teach them even more.

Having math supplies like clocks, calculators, coin stamps and fun hot dot games will not only stoke their fascination with math, but it will also enhance my students' learning experience by using materials that are fun and engaging.

Math can be meaningful in our classroom, but I can't do it alone. With your help and support, you can make it possible for my students to develop as mathematicians, as children, and as the future leaders of our community.
